Overview

Exarep (Example Retail Electric Provider) is a fake retail electric provider (REP) in ERCOT.

Domain

A Retail Electric Provider (REP) operates in the deregulated Texas electricity market managed by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). A REP purchases electricity on the wholesale market and sells it to retail customers, serving as the primary point of contact for all aspects of electric service.

REP responsibilities

  • Wholesale procurement — Buy electricity on the ERCOT wholesale market and manage supply costs
  • Customer service — Serve as the direct contact for customers, including billing, collections, and a 24-hour toll-free support line
  • Delivery coordination — Pay Transmission and Distribution Service Providers (TDSPs) for the delivery of electricity over poles and wires to customer premises
  • Retail transactions — Process enrollments, switches, and move-ins/move-outs through ERCOT's retail systems using Texas Standard Electronic Transactions (TX SET)
  • Settlement — Work with a Qualified Scheduling Entity (QSE) to settle wholesale financial transactions with ERCOT
  • Compliance — Follow all Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) rules, including consumer protection regulations

How customer switching works

  1. A customer contacts the new REP and signs up for service
  2. The REP submits an enrollment transaction to ERCOT
  3. ERCOT sends a verification letter to the customer, a notification to the TDSP, and a loss notification to the previous REP
  4. On the switch date, the TDSP performs a meter read and sends it to ERCOT
  5. ERCOT updates its registration database and forwards meter data to both the new and previous REP for final and initial billing
